We have between 5 and 7 minutes to complete a hygiene examination. Anytime longer than 7 minutes and the hygienists are upset because we are putting them behind, but if we spend less than 5 minutes, the patient is upset because we charged them for an exam that took less than 5 minutes. In this small amount of time, we have a high responsibility for proper diagnosis, including any oral soft tissue abnormalities. Screening is critical, and if oral cancer exists we are liable. Keep in mind, only 14% of patients claim to ever have had and oral cancer exam. A thorough exam is a must, and a white light exam may no longer be enough. VELscope Vx® completes a quick survey of the oral soft tissue and alerts you to whether or not an abnormality exists. It does not tell you if there is oral cancer, but it does alert you to abnormalities. This alert can save a life, as well as your practice from an unfortunate misdiagnosis.
The VELscope Vx centers on a wireless, handheld scope that uses natural tissue fluorescence to enhance oral mucosal abnormalities that might not be visible to the naked eye. Their website also boasts that this technology is backed by more clinical studies than any other device for tissue fluorescence visualization.
