Dry mouth is an ever-increasing battle we face in the dental world due to medications, hormones, cancer, autoimmune disorders and oral habits. Dry mouth occurs when there is a lack of saliva, which increases acidity levels. The change in acidity poses a huge increase in decay, mainly at the roots which causes significant tooth loss. Plaque also becomes stickier and more difficult to remove, leading to periodontal problems and tooth decay. Patients with severe dry mouth have difficulty talking and eating, and can have significant sores that are painful.
The introduction of SalivaMAX, which is a supersaturated calcium hydroxide, has been a life-changer for many of my patients. It can be a bit of a lengthy process, but with regular use, the patient begins to feel relief and does not mind the number of times they must swish daily (rinsing should be 2-10 times a day). SalivaMAX not only helps to increase and change the quality of the saliva, it also helps the dry damaged tissue by repairing and adding ions back into the tissue. It takes about five days of use for the patient to notice results. Patients need to be instructed on how to use the product and given proper timeline expectations. This product provides symptom relief. It does not cure dry mouth. This medication can be prescription filled at the pharmacy and mailed to the patient’s home. Because it is a fairly new product, some insurance companies don’t cover it. However, for many, the cost of $90 for 120 packets is worth it for those who are unable to eat and need symptom relief.
