With more than 1 trillion images captured every year, photographs are an incredibly important part of our everyday life. Did you know two-thirds of all learning occurs through visual communication? We must leverage photography when communicating to our patients. While a DSLR camera delivers the highest-quality photographs, beautiful intra- and extra-oral images can be achieved with the use of your cell phone. However, that is dependent on whether or not the lighting is right.
Proper lighting is now achievable thanks to an elegant solution designed by Professor Louis Hardan and developed by Smile Line. Smile Lite MDP is an easy-to-use, plug-and-play device. It doesn’t require a special app, calibration process or high skill level. The lighting system includes three different groups of LEDs: the middle sector acts similar to a ring flash, and the two outside angled lights operate as point flashes. The back of the device has a universal adaptor that can accommodate virtually every type of smartphone. That means every time you upgrade your smartphone, which usually has a better camera, you’re essentially giving yourself an upgraded camera for your dental office!
If you want to take your photography to the next level when communicating with your lab, you can place a magnetic polarization filter on the middle sector, highlighting items like incisal halos. This valuable system allows all team members to achieve fairly high-level photography with very little training. Equally important, and important in gaining the trust of patients, we can capture a few simple images without using an intimidating full DSLR setup.
