Our parents (and now likely us) would always say things like, “You don’t need all of those fancy gadgets! All we had was a stick and a ball and could play for hours.” Or this gem: “That’s not real music! Listen to this. Now THIS is good music!”
You get where I’m headed with this, right?
We are inundated with newer, faster, lighter and of course, purportedly better dental products. A perfect example of this is endless options for vertical compaction obturation. I began my career and training almost 20 years ago. We were just barely past the use of a torch and plugger and were considered advanced once we purchased and began using the System B heat source.
After switching to several different systems, purportedly for better, faster and more convenient usage, I’ve recently made my way back from residency to my System B. Over the years, every downpack system I have used has inevitably broken or underperformed. Most recently, my other system failed to charge adequately, and it eventually was dropped on the floor and broke beyond repair.
In the interim, I dusted off my System B to hold me over until the “newer, faster, better” product was delivered. After working for a half-day with my System B, I fell in love with it all over again. I hadn’t realized how great it really is -- dare I say, I totally took it for granted.
The System B has to be one of the most reliable, dependable products in dentistry. It held temperature steadily and worked with ease to remove coronal gutta percha and seal flawlessly. I adjusted temperatures and power levels and made quick work of every obturation. I immediately ordered four more System B’s, one for each operatory.
