When doing endodontic retreatment cases, the most important considerations are: Can I remove the existing obturation material? Can I improve upon the canal disinfection and obturation?
The most effective tool in my arsenal to address these “prognosis determining” concerns are my ProTaper universal retreatment files. They are ideally shaped and durable enough to be used to remove GP and obturation carriers alike.
I primarily use D2 and D3 files. The D1 works well in the coronal; however, it does not offer much improvement over a gates or ultrasonic tip. The D2, however, is amazing at finding traction along the sides of obturation carriers and pulling all debris and GP upward out of the canal. I’ve tried other brands of retreat files and have had tip separations and severe unwinding when using the pressure needed to engage obturation carriers. This makes them useless and costs me valuable time during treatment.
When using the D3 file, I’ve had tremendous success getting through carriers and the very difficult pastes and hardened sealers. It is not the most inexpensive retreat file on the market; however, it is the most efficient, and as we all know, time is money.
I would strongly recommend this product as a staple for anyone doing retreatment cases.
