The volume of information on heart disease and heart attack risk is very prevalent in the media. We are reading and hearing about sleep apnea, diabetes, genetic predispositions, etc., for heart attack risk. As healthcare providers, we need to know we are prepared when and if a medical emergency occurs in our practice.
We have chosen to be prepared in a few ways. Our practice has a yearly medical emergencies training for the entire team with CPR, sedation, and IV sedation emergency training, as well as nitrous certification. This year, we decided to install the Zoll AED.
The Zoll is one of the top-selling AEDs on the market. It is a bright lime-green box that contains the paddle and verbal directions on how to do a code. We chose it due to ease of use, step-by-step instructions on how to use the defibrillator during an emergency, and the CD for training. When someone is panicking during a stressful event, I wanted to eliminate the human element of forgetting what to do. As long as the team member can follow instructions, the Zoll will verbally walk them through it step by step, with feedback or corrections in procedure as needed.
It has a seven-year warranty, comes with an instructional CD for training future team members, and in-person training with installation.
