In the past, I have written about products that improve ergonomics, decrease practitioner fatigue, extend our careers, and just make working in dentistry more enjoyable. I am here to tell you about another such product that I suggest you add to your armamentarium: Soft Dental Grips.
These silicone based sleeves slide over your existing instrument handles, adding comfort and cushion to any of your favorite hand-held instruments. The non-slip surface increases the diameter of your instruments, minimizing hand fatigue and cramping.
The grips come in a wide array of colors that also can be used to color code cassettes and aid with staff training. Most manufacturers offer wide grip instruments, but with that added bulk comes added cost and weight. Soft grips add no extra weight to the instrument, and with a price that comes in at less than $4, they don’t take much weight from your wallet either.
This product is almost comical in its simplicity, but the benefits are undeniable. After using grips on a few instruments, you’ll want to quickly add as many as you can to your kits. I love my dental operating microscope and my ergonomic chair, but a very strong argument can be made for an even better ROI on this very simple product.
