The SMART Protocol

February 12, 2019

Today, patients are more informed about current trends in health related services and are very strong advocates for their own care. The abundance of information available through social media, the internet and from alternative me medicine practitioners has my patients asking for more natural treatment options.

To meet that demand, we have adopted the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) protocol in our practice. This is a certification you can obtain from the American Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (AAMOT).

The protocol was developed to decrease the risks from mercury vapor and mercury ingestion during amalgam removal. It protects the patient, the doctor and the team. The method focuses on providing protective equipment for patients, which includes covering their nose with a nasal hood and covering their face. Dentists and team members also use similar protective clothing and face shields.

Through this protocol, offices use carbon filters and large suction devices to remove vapor in the operatory, while dentists remove amalgam in large chunks to reduce the amount of vapor emitted. Isolation devices are also used.

As a SMART trained dentist, I can serve as a resource for patients who have concerns regarding mercury and toxins, making them more comfortable with amalgam removal.
