As social media continues to infiltrate our lives, it’s difficult for dentistry not to be impacted as well. Considering the Millennial population is growing at a pace that will outstrip the Baby boomers very soon, we can either resist or embrace it. Often, dentistry is perceived with negative connotations of pain and anxiety. However, there are so many positive things our profession provides. We have the ability to profoundly improve one’s health, well-being and self-esteem. Social media can help us communicate that.
A few weeks ago, two of my team members came to me asking how they could order this cool hooded sweatshirt they saw on social media. The imprint on the shirt was “Anti-Cavity Cavity Club,” and they had seen multiple posts and Instagram stories about it. I asked them what they liked about the sweatshirt and they basically thought it was fun and trendy. They wanted to be part of the experience other colleagues across North America were enjoying. However, it wasn’t available anymore, so they were disappointed.
Fortunately for them, I know the person who created these hoodies. I contacted Dr. Brian Baliwas, who is known as @sfdentalnerd on Instagram, and he offered to rerelease the hoodies for a limited time. When I asked him what he was trying to accomplish, he explained this was his version of clothing for dental “hype beasts.”
How many of you have heard of the term “hype beast?” The Urban Dictionary defines hype beast as “A person who follows a trend to be cool or in style. A person who wears what is hyped up.” There are a few brands associated with hype including Supreme, Champion and Adidas. @sfdentalnerd thought it would be fun to create dental parodies of some of these brands along with a new movement of dental hype beasts.
@sfdentalnerd has brought a positive and fun spin to dentistry. He’s creating a community within the dental profession that can have fun and feel like part of a movement. The fact this is also an “anti-cavity” club is beautiful. Who doesn’t want to be part of that? As @sfdentalnerd says: “It’s a way for us all to show our dental nerdiness using pop culture fashion.”
