Cyanoacrylate has been used in medicine for some time. This latest formula from GluStitch works very well and is designed specifically for the oral environment. When I was first introduced to it, I thought it was a one trick pony. I was so wrong. It’s actually quite versatile.
PeriAcryl 90HV is the newest form of GluStitch. The HV stands for high viscosity, which makes it very easy to apply and use in the mouth. Recently, I used PeriAcryl to stabilize clot formation, avoid food impaction into the surgical site, and help protect the sutures from a partial denture to avoid suture tension loss.
In some cases, it can be used in place of sutures all together! But in most cases, I use it as an adjunct to suturing. This allows me to use fewer sutures, decrease chair time and improve results.
This is an excellent adjunct for hemostasis as well as to maintain the blood clot. Because it also minimizes micro-motion of the graft area, esthetic results are maximized.
If I am performing an extraction and socket preservation, I usually place a collagen plug. I use PeriAcryl 90HV as a liquid bandage around the margin to help create the best seal possible.
So next time patients ask if you can fix it with superglue, you can say YES!
